Maggie woke the next morning in her own bed, feeling so-o-o much better. She’d gotten a little crazy with the carnival food. Not just funnel cake but also French fries, lemonade, kettle corn, and way too many corn dogs. That couldn’t be helped. The guy who worked the corn dog stand, Quinn, sang when he took orders and when he counted change. In fact, he never spoke once. His voice was deep and melodic, and she loved it. He was early thirties with striking good looks—black hair, blue eyes, tall, and ropey with muscles—that made him incredibly photogenic. She hung around, getting in line over and over again to listen to him and snap pictures. Over a short break, Quinn sang his story to her. He’d been mute for years due to a terrible stutter. It was Odd Todd who’d discovered the reason and gotten him singing on their long drives. He’d discovered he didn’t stutter when he sang. It was all so amazing. She’d never known singing could do that.

She took a shower and brushed her teeth, remembering how sweet Patrick had been, carrying her to his trailer in the biggest swooniest romantic gesture she’d ever experienced. She was, of course, mortified that she’d tossed her cookies in front of Patrick on the night they were supposed to be kissing on top of the Ferris wheel, but he’d been really cool about it. After a short nap in his trailer, she’d thanked him and walked home.

Today was a fresh gorgeous summer day, and she couldn’t wait to get to work on her new project. She saw it more as a beautiful photographic collage than a flyer, and she knew she’d have way too much material to work with the way her ideas were flowing, but she didn’t care. She hadn’t felt this jazzed about a project ever. This morning, the staff was on cleanup duty, and she wanted to capture some of that action too. By noon, everything would open again. Patrick would be working some of the game booths in rotation—ball and bucket toss, milk bottles, dart balloons, and a basketball hoop game.

When she arrived at the carnival grounds, she didn’t see Patrick. She decided to be stealthy and snap pictures without interacting with anyone just to capture the staff’s natural demeanors. The Fellini brothers with canes were using long-handled sticks with points on the end to pick up litter, tossing it into garbage bags hooked on the front of their two brothers’ walkers. It was a tandem, slow dance of cleanup but beautiful in its way. One of them caught her taking pictures and winked. She wiggled her fingers at him but kept her distance so they’d keep working. She’d even dressed in her least flashy plain light blue shirtwaist dress so she’d blend into the background.

“What do you think you’re doing?” a female voice full of authority demanded.

She whirled and came face-to-face with Alice Taylor, one of Aunt Carolyn’s friends, who was definitely not wearing the typical Fieldridge summer wear.
